King Tubby's Hi Fi... pon tape!

Comme écrit dans le livre King Tubby—the Dub master (DREAD Editions), seuls trois enregistrements des soirées mythiques du King Tubby’s Hi Fi sound system nous sont parvenus. Dont un, exceptionnel, daté de 1975, avec U Roy au micro, toastant jusqu’aux prochaines dates. Ces témoignages sont d’une grande valeur historique et artistique malgré leur qualité souvent relative (ils proviennent d’enregistrements réalisés à partir de ghetto blasters). Les spécialistes sont persuadés qu’il en existe d’autres, mais que leurs propriétaires préfèrent les garder pour eux-mêmes. Ils finiront peut-être par ressortir, en espérant que les cassettes ne s’altèrent pas entre-temps.

En attendant, on scrute nos photos inédites parues dans la biographie de King Tubby, et on reste bouchée bouée devant celle où Leroy Smart est immortalisé à l’intérieur du Ranch (dans la cour du 18 Dromilly Avenue) aux côtés d’amis (dont Pat Kelly apparemment). Le véritable trésor de ce cliché est quasiment invisible. Il se trouve tout en haut à gauche : ce sont des bandes, posées sur une étagère. L’une d’entre elles, surtout, attire notre attention. Sur le dos, elle porte l’inscription manuscrite : King Tubby’s HI FI ! L’enregistrement d’une soirée, sans l’ombre d’un doute. Á partir de la console, qui plus est. La bande d’à côté porte l’inscription : King Tubby’s . Probablement un autre enregistrement... de même que la demi-douzaine de bandes non étiquetées posées à côté. Ces joyaux ont existé, donc. Et existent peut-être toujours. En espérant pourvoir les entendre un jour.

As stated in the book King Tubby—the Dub Master (DREAD Editions) we only have three recordings of the Tubby’s Hi Fi—including the iconic one from 1975, with U Roy at the control toasting over the Spanglers’ Clap dub. These testimonies are thus highly valuable, notwithstanding their relative quality (they were recorded with ghetto blasters, not from the board). According to some people, other recordings exist today, but their owners keep them for themselves. They will probably see the day of light one day—let’s hope they’re stored in good conditions.

I was looking at the pictures published in the book, the other day. And suddenly, I froze. There’s a particular picture featuring Leroy Smart and probably Pat Kelly. They’re laughing inside the Ranch (in the yard of the 18 Dromilly Avenue) with friends and this is already a very rare and valuable photo. But there’s more about it. In the top left corner, in the background, we can see a series of tapes stored on a shelf. One of them reads: King Tubby’s Hi Fi! And the next one: King Tubby’s. There are half a dozen more, without label. So here they are, these recordings we’re all dreaming about! Recorded straight from the console, by Tubby himself! Hopefully, someone collected them after Tubby died, and we will be able to listen to them one day.
