Peintre et chanteur, Danny Coxson a réalisé des dizaines de portraits d'artistes pour le chanteur Sugar Minott, que l'on peut toujours admirer au studio Youthman Promotion, à Kingston. Rencontre.

Toute sa vie, le chanteur Sugar Minott aura volontairement maintenu un lien avec la rue par le biais de son studio Youthman Promotion. Localisée au cœur du ghetto, cette structure a toujours eu des allures de centre social et artistique. Ici, tout gamin désireux de s'extirper de la rue trouve un petit coin de cour où dormir, un repas chaud. Je me souviens d'avoir rencontré Sugar sur place, en 1999. Il me désigna des gamins inconnus qui réclamaient une photo : « Prends-les en photo, man ! Et rappelle-toi qu’avant de percer, Garnet Silk a dormi là, par terre, sur un bout de carton, pendant des semaines. » Avant de devenir une star mondiale du reggae... Bienvenue au bien nommé Youthman Promotion.

En 1999, on trouvait déjà des fresques sur tous les murs du studio—et Sugar en parlait avec beaucoup de passion. Juste avant sa mort, survenue en 2010, il a demandé au street artist Donovan ‘Danny Coxson’ McLeod de repeindre l’intégralité des lieux. Des dizaines et dizaines de mètres carrés de murs, couverts aujourd’hui de somptueux portraits d’artistes—la plupart tirés de pochettes de disques. Le tout réalisé avec une impressionnante dextérité ; surtout lorsque l’on sait que Danny Coxson n’a plus que trois doigts à la main dont il se sert pour manier le pinceau—souvenir d’un incident domestique. Le studio Youthman Promotion est toujours actif de nos jours ; les enfants de Sugar perpétuent la tradition altruiste de leur père (c'est son fils qui nous fait la visite en 2018) et de nombreux artistes enregistrent sur place, des chansons ou des dub plates (titres exclusifs dédiés à la gloire d’un sound system).​

On trouve donc un nombre impressionnant d’œuvres signées Danny Coxson à Youthman Promotion—mais en dehors de cela, pas grand-chose. L’exposition Anything With Nothing, organisée par la National Gallery of Jamaica en 2014, se penchait sur son oeuvre. Il confiait, à cette occasion: « Je fais cela depuis 35 ans maintenant. Ça n’a jamais été facile. J’ai travaillé très dur pour atteindre un certain niveau et je ne sais pas vraiment comment j’en suis arrivé là parce que je n’ai pas fait beaucoup d’œuvres... Mais je pense que l’inspiration divine m’a permis d’atteindre ce niveau que les gens jugent acceptable. » Danny Coxson fait partie de ces peintres-chanteurs, nombreux dans le street art. Sous le nom d’Ever Red, il a signé un classique underground, Them Nuh Ruff Like We (Super Tone), dans les années 80.

Son art l’a tout de même emmené... jusqu’en France, où il a réalisé les portraits de l’exposition Jamaica Jamaica! hébergée par la Philharmonie de Paris en 2017 ! Depuis, loin de son quartier de Denham Town, à Kingston, Danny travaille à ses peintures non loin de Paris, qu’il vend en direct aux amateurs éclairés. Il doit rentrer bientôt à Kingston. En attendant, toujours actif dans la musique, il vient de sortir un album intitulé Gallist (Gemstar, 2018) et en annonce déjà un autre, Africa Is My Home. Il devrait se produire sur scène en France, en Allemagne et à Londres sous peu.

All his life, Sugar Minott maintained a direct link with the street through his Youthman Promotion studio. Located at the heart of the ghetto, his studio has always been a sort of social and artistic centre where every youth looking for a safe place to sleep and a food to eat could come. I remember meeting him there in 1999. Pointing at some unknown singers, he told me: “Take their picture, man. You know that Garnett Silk slept there for weeks, pon this very ground, before him break.” There were already paintings all over the place—and Sugar talked about them with passion.

Just before he passed away in 2010, Sugar asked street artist Donovan “Danny Coxson” McLeod to paint over the whole place. It represents dozens and dozens of square metres, covered with gorgeous portraits of the biggest Jamaican stars—most of the time copied from record sleeves. The result is breath taking, especially since the artist has lost two fingers from the hand he uses to paint, following a domestic incident. The Youthman Promotion camp is still active in Kingston nowadays. Sugar’s children keep the flame burning (his son led us around); many artists still record here, and they have all the required links for “dub plates” (some exclusive songs, recorded for a particular Disco, or sound system).

You’ll find dozens of paintings by Coxson in Youthman Promotion—as well as in the few streets around. But apart from that—not much. The Anything With Nothing exhibition of the National Gallery of Jamaica (2014) celebrated Coxson’s talent at home. He told them: “Been an artist for almost 35 years now. It’s not been easy. I have to really work hard to really get to a standard, and I’m not really sure of how I really get to this stage because I haven’t done a lot of work…but I feel God’s inspiration allowed me to reach a standard acceptable to people.” Danny is also a singer, and he even scored an underground hit in the 80s with the tune Them Nuh Ruff Like We (Super Tone), which is still popular today—it has recently been repressed.

His works took him as far as France! Indeed, in 2017, he became the official painter of the Jamaica Jamaica! exhibition in Paris. Nowadays, far from his community of Denham Town, Danny Coxson is still working near Paris, where he’s selling his paintings to art connoisseurs, but shall soon had back to Jamaica. Still active in the music field, he’s just put out an album entitled Gallist (Gemstar, 2018), and expects a brand new one, Africa His My Home soon. Then he will tour Germany, France and England.
