Gijsbert Hanekroot a soixante-dix ans passés, et des souvenirs photographiques pour remplir plusieurs vies. Dont celui d’un concert mémorable de Bob Marley, donné par le chanteur à la Hague, en Hollande, en 1977.Ce sont les clichés pris à cette occasion qui font l'objet de l'exposition Babylon By Bus, organisée à la Galerie Stardust, jusqu'au 31 décembre prochain. Lorsque Gijsbert se glisse pour la première fois dans une loge d'artiste, il a quinze ans. Il prend alors son premier portrait, celui du jazzman John Coltrane. « Si tu voyais la photo, nous confie Alex, le responsable de la galerie, elle est magnifique ! » Par la suite, Hanekroot va mitrailler les plus grands artistes pop, de David Bowie à Mick Jagger en passant par Tina Turner ou Johnny Cash. Carreaux de ciment, verrière en fer, bacs de vinyles bien fournis et matériel hi-fi haut de gamme, la galerie Stardust, désormais localisée au Pré Saint-Gervais (93), aux portes de Paris (à 200 mètres de la Porte de Pantin), a tout du sanctuaire pour mélomane. C’est donc naturellement que les tirages d'Hanekroot s’inscrivent dans le décor.

Gijsbert, comment en es-tu arriver à prendre ces photos de Bob Marley ?

Je travaillais à l’époque pour un magazine musical bihebdomadaire en Hollande, OOR, pour lequel je couvrais la scène rock depuis le début des années 70 à un rythme effréné. En 1976, j’ai pris mes premières photos de Bob lors d’une croisière promotionnelle organisée le long des canaux d’Amsterdam. Et en 1977, j’ai couvert son concert à la Hague.

En le rencontrant, as-tu ressenti quelque chose de particulier ou était-il comme toutes ces stars que tu croisais ?

Lors de cette petite croisière sur les canaux, il m’a paru tout à fait ordinaire ; en peu timide, même et très coopératif ; mais sur scène, c’était un autre homme, transcendé par son incroyable charisme. Seuls Jagger et Bowie dégageaient la même aura.

Quels souvenirs gardes-tu du concert ? Aimais-tu le reggae alors ?

J’aime le reggae, oui. Le concert fut très excitant à cause du charisme de Marley et de ce qu’il apportait.

Quelle est ta photo préférée de Bob dans celles que tu as faites ?

Il s’agit de l’un des portraits que j’ai fait à Amsterdam (voir photo 1). Difficile de dire pourquoi ; je trouve juste que c’est un beau portrait.

Pourquoi faire cette exposition aujourd’hui ?

Nous venons de publier un livre sur Marley avec Martijn Huisman, Babyblon By Bus, Bob Marley & the Wailers, Live and Up Close. L’exposition accompagne la sortie du livre et permet de faire voir mon travail.

In his seventies, Gijsbert Hanekroot has enough photographic memories to fill several lives. Including a remarkable show given by Bob Marlet at La Hague, Netherlands, in 1977. The pictures he took at the time are now displayed in Paris, at the Galerie Stardust, from Nov. 9 to Dec. 31. When Gijsbert slipped backstage for the first time, he was 15. He took his first portrait, of John Coltrane! "The photo is terrific!" says Alex, the curator of the Babylon By Bus exhibition. Hanekrrot then photographed the greatest pop stars, from Mick Jagger to David Bowie to Tina Turner to Johnny Cash. Ciment tiles on the floor, a small industrial atrium, fully loaded record bins and top-range hi-fi material, the Galerie Stradust now located in Le Pré Saint-Gervais (93) just outside Paris, seems the perfect place for music lovers. Hanekroot's pictures naturally fit in this dedicated setting.

• In a few words, can you please tell us how you came to take pictures of Bob Marley?

Since the beginning of the seventies I was working foor a Ducht bi-weekly music magazine OOR (Ear) so I covered the rock scene quite intensively. In 1976 I took photos at a press conference on a canal boat trip through Amsterdam. In 1977 I did the concert in The Hague.

• You met him a few times, could you feel something "special" coming out of him

or was he like any other "rock star"?

On the boat trip he was quite "normal", even shy and cooperative but on stage someting special happened because of his unique charisma. Only Bowie and Jagger are this big in this respect.

• What are your recollections of the concert? Did you enjoy reggae music?

I like reggae music. The concert was pretty exiting because of the charisma of Marley and what it brought about.

• What is your favourite picture of Bob?

It is one of the portraits I took in Amsterdam, see attachment. Difficult to say why. I think it's a good portrait.

• Why did you decide to show your work about Bob today?

With Martijn Huisman we produced the book BABYLON BY BUS Bob Marley & the Wailers Live and Up Close and the exhibition is about promoting the book and showing my work.
